Our Foundation
Distinctly Japanese
At Wabi-Sabi Japan we are especially interested in traditional Japanese cultural practices and the finely detailed workmanship of the craftspeople. Many non-Japanese are aware of sumo, karate, tea ceremony and flower arrangement but know little of the numerous other distinctly Japanese practices and arts or the regional variations of these found throughout the country. We want you to gain a greater understanding of these traditions, both the celebrated and the less renowned. Emblematic features such as discipline, commitment and respect for ancestry will provide insights into Japan for all who witness these customs and skills.
Apprenticeship
One of our biggest concerns is that many of these unique specialties and crafts are slowly disappearing in Japan. We hope that by exposing them to a wider audience it will become more enticing for a new generation to learn from today’s masters. As part of this goal we established a foundation that will sponsor apprentices while they study in their chosen area of interest. We have always made donations to the schools and artists we visit and will continue to support their educational work. In addition, we will now provide direct funding to an individual to assist them during their apprenticeship. Perhaps someday we will proudly feature one of these apprentices in the "Profiles" section of this website.
